We do not offer additional services such as aftercare, including burial, cremation, and transportation, etc. and other than clipping a small amount of fur to create a memorial keepsake, we are unable remove objects (e.g., microchip, surgical hardware, etc.) or body parts/fluids (e.g., ears, paw, urine, blood, etc.) from a pet.
Why At Home Euthanasia Is Especially Beneficial for Cats
Cats are creatures of comfort who find security in the familiar (e.g., the people they love, the spaces they know, and the scents that make a house feel like home). Unlike dogs, who often adapt more readily to new environments, cats tend to experience greater stress when taken outside of their familiar surroundings, and a veterinary visit, however compassionate the care, can be an overwhelming experience for many feline companions.
In a clinical setting, it is common to see cats retreating to the back of their carrier and their eyes may be dilated and their bodies tense. However, at home, the difference is often remarkable. Many cats are visibly more relaxed (e.g., enjoying chin scratches, moving freely through their familiar space, and showing interest in treats offered to them). Families frequently share, both during and after the appointment, that they could see how much calmer their cat was at home, and that choosing in home euthanasia felt like the right decision for their companion.
For a cat, spending their final moments in the home they know, surrounded by the people they love, is a profound act of kindness… and it is at the heart of everything we do at HolisticalVets.
Recognizing Quality of Life Decline in Cats
Cats are often very good at masking pain and discomfort, which can make it genuinely difficult for even the most attentive owner to recognize when their cat is struggling. By the time signs of decline become obvious, a cat may have been experiencing discomfort for longer than their family realized, which is why paying close attention to subtle changes in behavior, appetite, grooming, and daily habits can be so important.
If you are unsure whether your cat’s quality of life is declining, we provided a complimentary Quality of Life Assessment Form. It is designed to help you reflect on your cat’s daily experiences and gain clarity during what is often an emotionally overwhelming time.

Pet Aftercare Options Following In Home Cat Euthanasia in Central and South Jersey
We understand that making aftercare arrangements for your beloved cat after in home euthanasia can feel difficult and overwhelming. By handling these arrangements yourself, you have the opportunity to choose a path that reflects your personal preferences and honors your cat with care, dignity, and respect. Taking an active role in aftercare can also provide a sense of closure and peace, helping you find comfort in knowing you made the best decision for your companion’s final journey.
Cremation and Aquamation
If you prefer cremation for your beloved companion, we recommend first contacting your cat’s primary veterinarian or veterinary facility, as they may offer pet cremation services for their established patients. In some cases, urgent care veterinary facilities or 24/7 emergency veterinary hospitals may also be able to assist with cremation services for pets transported to their location. To offer support, we have compiled a
list of local urgent care and emergency veterinary hospitals, along with their contact information, that families can contact directly to see if cremation services are offered to pets euthanized at home.
Alternatively, you may also choose to reach out directly to a local pet crematory to make aftercare arrangements yourself, as this gives you the opportunity to select a service that feels right for your family and honors your cat’s memory in a way that feels most meaningful. To help during this incredibly difficult time, we’ve compiled the following table with contact information for several pet crematories that are located throughout and/or service Central and South Jersey (additional crematories can be found through an online search).
While our staff has had positive and professional experiences with the facilities listed below, HolisticalVets is not affiliated with any crematory, and the inclusion or exclusion of pet crematories in the list below does not in any way indicate an endorsement or lack of one.
If you choose cremation or aquamation via a pet crematory, we suggest contacting the pet crematory of your choice a few days prior to the euthanasia appointment to make and confirm arrangements.
If you arrange for your cat to be picked up from your home by a pet crematory, if possible, we recommend scheduling for a time that’s two hours after your scheduled in home euthanasia appointment time (for example, if you schedule an in home euthanasia appointment for 2pm, we recommend requesting that the pet crematory arrive at 4pm if possible).
Home Pet Burial in Central and South Jersey
Having your pet nearby, even after their passing, can be deeply comforting. If you prefer burial, we recommend ensuring all local ordinances are followed, as burying a pet after euthanasia can have serious environmental consequences due to the medications used and may be illegal in some areas, potentially resulting in government-issued fines or legal penalties.
To help you determine whether home burial is a viable and lawful option, we’ve compiled
information and general guidance regarding pet home burial.
We understand that the loss of a beloved pet can be an emotionally challenging experience.
To provide support during this difficult time, we have compiled a
list of pet loss support resources, which can offer comfort and guidance as you navigate the grieving process.
What to Expect During Our In Home Cat Euthanasia Process in Central and South Jersey
At HolisticalVets, we understand that the in home euthanasia process is an emotional and deeply personal experience for every family. To help you know what to expect, we’ve outlined a general step-by-step overview of our cat euthanasia process below.
While each appointment follows a similar structure, our approach is thoughtfully designed to be as gentle, calm, and stress-free as possible. Every detail, from our peaceful pacing to our use of holistic, low-stress, and Fear Free handling methods, reflects our commitment to your cat’s comfort, dignity, and emotional well being during their final moments.
Please note that the specific steps below may vary slightly depending on your cat’s individual needs and comfort level, as we strive to create a peaceful, compassionate, and comforting at home euthanasia experience that honors your beloved companion and supports your family through this difficult time.
Introduction
First, we will arrive at or near the scheduled time (within the 2 hour (120 minutes) estimated time of arrival window) and introduce ourselves to you, your cat, and your family.
After introducing ourselves to your cat, we will then examine him or her and if permitted, offer them some tasty treats to help them relax.
If euthanasia is still elected, we will then request that a form confirming your decision for cat euthanasia is signed.
Medications: Pre-Euthanasia Sedation and Anesthesia
When you and your cat are ready, we will administer a potent anesthetic containing a pain-reliever to minimize any potential discomfort going forward.
It’s important to note that the anesthetic may be given orally and/or via injection (please note that the injection may cause a brief stinging sensation for a few seconds) and that some pets may need repeated injections depending on their individual needs (these repeated doses are much less likely to be felt by the pet).
In order to give the anesthetic the best chance of working properly, it is highly important that the environment around your cat be quiet, calm, and free from anxiety at all times and that any handling of your cat (e.g., petting, hugging, etc.) be done so in a soft and quiet manner, as overstimulating touch and sounds will decrease the effectiveness of the anesthetic and may make it harder for him or her to relax.
Medications: Euthanasia
Once your cat is fully anesthetized and is completely unaware of their surroundings, the veterinarian will administer the euthanasia solution through a peripheral vein (in the limbs) and/or an abdominal vein; however, depending on the pet, other routes may be selected if deemed easier for the pet.
It is important to note that certain factors, such as low blood pressure, fragile veins, or other circumstances, may require our veterinarian to carefully examine multiple veins to ensure their proper functioning before administering the euthanasia solution to your pet.
This process may involve clipping a small section of fur to assist in visualizing the vein(s) if necessary, followed by the gentle insertion of a needle into one or more veins to assess their patency and ensure the smooth flow of the solution. Rest assured that once anesthetized, your cat will be in a deep, painless sleep and will not experience any discomfort.
Please be aware that the time it takes for your cat to pass away can vary, ranging from a few seconds to over an hour and during this process, your cat may exhibit involuntary reflexes; however, they will not be aware of these reflexes occurring.
A Peaceful Passing
The veterinarian will confirm your cat’s passing by listening to his or her heart and assessing their eyes, which may remain open. This step may be repeated multiple times over a period of 10-30 minutes to ensure that your cat has indeed passed away peacefully.
Lastly, as a heartfelt gesture, if you elected to receive them in the consent form, we will gift you with personalized pet memorial keepsakes that are meant to help you cherish and remember your beloved cat.
Please note that the digital ink prints will be emailed (to the email address on file) and memorial bookmarks will be mailed via the postal service (to the mailing address on file) in the days following the at home euthanasia appointment. HolisticalVets is not responsible for prolonged mail transit times.
Please note: To ensure the highest level of care and minimize any potential errors, it is important that the legal pet owner (or an authorized agent of the legal pet owner) be present at the beginning of the appointment. Their presence is needed to confirm the identity of the cat to be euthanized, although they are not required to remain for the actual procedure if they prefer not to.
In addition to requiring that an in-person authorization form for euthanasia be signed, we may also ask the legal pet owner (or their authorized agent) to present valid identification, such as a driver’s license or state ID, before any services are provided. We also request that the in home euthanasia appointment take place on a property owned or rented by the legal pet owner (or authorized agent), or on a property where they have obtained explicit permission for the procedure to be performed.
These measures help ensure that every cat receives the proper care, respect, and attention they deserve. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
